Winter Coop Preparation: Your Complete Checklist

Published on February 20, 2024

Prepare your coop and flock for cold weather with this comprehensive winter preparation guide.

Winter preparation is crucial for keeping your chickens healthy and comfortable during cold months. Start by inspecting your coop for drafts—chickens can handle cold but not drafts. Seal any gaps while maintaining proper ventilation (ventilation and drafts are different). Add extra bedding for insulation and warmth. Consider installing a heated waterer to prevent freezing, as access to water is critical. Increase feed slightly as chickens burn more calories staying warm. Check that your coop is predator-proof, as hungry predators are more active in winter. Ensure roosting bars are wide enough for chickens to cover their feet with their bodies. If you use supplemental heat, ensure it's safe and installed correctly. Stock up on feed and supplies before severe weather. Finally, have a plan for deep snow—chickens need access to their run even in winter weather.
